Great guidebook on biking and hiking through the Cordillera and Huayhuash available

N eil and Harriet Pike at the proud English authors of Peru’s Cordilleras Blanca & Huayhuash: the Hiking & Biking Guide. The couple met trekking in Chilean Patagonia in 2002 and together discovered a love for exploring the natural world on foot. They hiked extensively in Europe and Asia before buying bikes in Istanbul and cycling home to Oxford. An 18-month bike tour through the Andes followed, which ignited a passion for cycling high roads and climbing 6,000m high volcanoes. Both are active bloggers and information on thousands of kilometres of Andean dirt roads can be easily accessed at andesbybike.com. Harriet and Neil seem to know every dirt road in the Cordilleras and Huayhuash range and have combined their experiences and adventures in this great guide which also offers very detailed maps on (mountain) biking and hiking.

The practical guide contains 50 detailed route maps and descriptions covering 20 hiking trails and 30 days of paved and dirt road cycle touring. It´s divided into seven parts and include classic treks like the Huayhuash Circuit, the Santa Cruz trip and Alpamayo Basecamp, as well as lesser known, wild walks in valleys which see few visitors. A special section is the cycle touring with the Huascarán Circuit, a loop of Peru’s highest mountain, as well as four other multi-day rides and five day-cycles from Huaraz. Covers all the information cyclists need to pedal past glaciers on 6,000m peaks or fly down 2,500m descents from high passes.

According to the Pikes: ¨The guide aims to promote what a great area Áncash is and try and make people realise that trekking in Peru isn’t just about the Inca Trail¨. They have accomplished their objectives by far as the guidebook counts 256 pages including a Spanish words and phrases section, GPS waypoints, information on clothing, equipment, health precautions, inoculations, insurance and high altitude travel. More information about the guide can be obtained at blancahuayhuash.com and the guidebook is also available at Amazon.co.uk. Furthermore, Peru’s Cordilleras Blanca & Huayhuash should also be available within Peru soon and will be distributed by SBS in Lima. To purchase the book online click here.
