Cleanup work executed at laguna Willcacocha by Huaraz Municipality

I n just a couple of years, the lagoon Willcacocha has become one of the region´s most popular day hikes. The lake located in the Cordillera Negra near the community of Santa Cruz is located at 3,745 metres above sea-level counts with a 12,819 m2 surface and is characterised by its water scarcity and diversity of flora and fauna, including eight species of birds like the yanavico, coot, puna duck, sutro duck, and for example the Andean gull.

Willcacocha, because of its great location, offers an exceptional viewpoint towards the Cordillera Blanca, allowing to identify peaks as the Huandoy North, the Huascaran, Chopicalqui, Hualcan, Vallunaraju, Ocshapalca, Ranrapalca, Palcaraju, Churup, Chinchey, San Juan, Huamasraju, Huatzan, Cashan, Shacsha, Pucaraju, Muruaraju and Caullaraju to the south. The name Willcacocha comes from Quechua, Willka meaning grandson and Cocha means Laguna or lagoon.

The mayor of the Provincial Municipality of Huaraz, Alberto Espinoza Cerrón, and Councilwoman Avilia Chavez Mori supervised the cleaning and desilting works of the Management of Urban and Rural Development on Friday September the 30th in the morning. Also, to improve the quality of life the inhabitants of this place and with the support of the Ministry of Housing, Construction and Sanitation, a budget of more than 3 million soles is available to develop basic sanitation works in Santa Cruz. The mayor of Santa Cruz, Ramon Bautista Oncoy and the inhabitants of this sector were clearly happy with the initiative and thanked the provincial authority of Huaraz. The lake can be visited the whole year around and as before mentioned, it´s the perfect day hike to get acclimatised.
