German (59) dies on Nevado Mateo near Huaraz; appears to have slipped, fallen and got killed

O n the 29th of November at around noon, tourist guide Fredy Gonzales Valverde descended Mount Mateo and found the body of a 59-year-old person in prone position. The guide immediately called to the police in Shilla, who informed the Department of High Mountain Rescue (DEPSAM) in Yungay. A total of nine policemen headed to Mount Mateo and together with a representative of the Public Ministry, the death of the German tourist was confirmed. His body was found in the rocky moraine area of Mount Mateo.

According to the police, the German citizen had left his car near to the Punta Olimpica tunnel, which might suggest that the tourist was actually living in Peru. According to Mayor Jesús Cano Pajuelo of the Department of High Mountain Rescue, the body of the unfortunate tourist has been brought to the morgue in Huaraz for further investigation. The German Embassy is aware of the accident and is in constant contact with the family of the very unfortunate Albrecht Peter Michael Plank. Albrecht appears to have passed away between the 28th and 29th.

Mount Mateo at 5,150 metres above sea-level is probably one of the easier mountains located in the Cordillera Blanca, however it appears to be a tricky mountain as earlier this year Spanish Alberto Cuadros of 30 years and Dutch national Hendrick (Erik) Elsinga of 48 years suffer a similar incident but luckily survived a fall. Erik Elsinga survived a fall of 120 meters at Mount Mateo and suffered from two broken ribs and a stiff hip. Erik admitted to The Huaraz Telegraph that he was very lucky to have fallen on a stone platform that broke his fall.
