F idel de la Cruz head of the Fire Department Santiago Antúnez De Mayolo number 84 in Huaraz showed his anger to a local newspaper about the fact that the Fire Department receives over 400 fake emergency calls per day. Peru’s firefighters are nothing short of heroes as Peru’s bomberos are all unpaid volunteers who are using out-of-date equipment most of the time, risking their own lives to safe someone else’s life.
In Huaraz however, and although fires are pretty uncommon, their work doesn’t seem to receive the credits that they might deserve. De la Cruz stated that he and his colleagues are outraged and worried because they receive between 400 to 450 fake calls every day on their 24 hours serving alarm line. Not only do these false or mocking calls waste precious time but they may also prevent an entering call for real help.
Additionally, Fidel de la Cruz stated that it is incredible how people waste their time on nonsense and what is most striking is the majority of the calls are made by adult women. The head of the fire brigade in Huaraz stated that apart from adult women there are also many children who call the alarm line without any reason. The FD in Huaraz is considering making these calls public in the near future.
