Argentine citizen hurt as interprovincial bus burns down completely in Tortugas

T he accident was registered on Wednesday at 4 o’clock in the morning at the height of km 396 near the oval of Tortugas beach in the jurisdiction of the province of Casma. The fire seems to have been caused by a mechanical failure, although this is being investigated by the National Police. Tortugas is a popular destination por people from Lima to spend their holidays.

The fire originated in the back of the bus and although most passengers were asleep, some managed to run to the front part of the bus to warn the driver. Moments afterwards, driver Carlos Geldres parked on the side of the road while the passengers tried by all means to get off the bus. Argentine citizen Susana Irene Ferrando (50) jumped out the window of the second floor of the vehicle to escape the fire. She fractured her calf bone in her right leg and was aided at the Regional Hospital later that morning.

There were in total 73 passengers aboard the El Dorado bus that had left Trujillo and was heading to Peru´s capital Lima. Susana Irene Ferrando claimed that all passengers have been very lucky as they easily could have been burned alive while asleep. Additionally we questioned the company to use a bus without air-conditioning. When the firefighters arrived there was little they could do. All passengers had left the bus which burned down completely. The passengers´ luggage turned into ashes too.
