Huaraz based Sport Rosario surprise package in National Summer Tournament

S port Rosario is representing Huaraz at the highest tier of the Peruvian football pyramid and until so far they have proved to be the surprise package in the Torneo de Verano 2017 (National Summer Tournament). The tournament started on the 4th of February with the group stages and will end on the 30th of April with the final. Sport Rosario is able to participate because the Nicrupampa neighbourhood team won the Copa Perú last year.

The 16 teams that form the Peruvian Premier Division are divided into two groups and the teams will play each other twice. After 14 matches, the group leaders of group A and B will play each other twice to decide the winner. The champion of the Torneo de Verano will qualify for the first phase of the Copa Libertadores 2018.

As Sport Ancash F.C. failed in their promotion bid, all hopes are on Sport Rosario being a decent representative of Huaraz at the highest level. And, until so far, they haven’t disappointed gathering nine points out of four matches. Sport Rosario, managed by Argentine manager Gerardo Ameli won its first three matches without conceding a goal.  Unfortunately they lost yesterday their first match 1-3 against Club Deportivo Universidad de San Martín de Porres. This Saturday they will play the leaders of Group A, Sporting Cristal. Club Sporting Cristal S.A is the defending champion of the Primera División del Perú (also known as the Copa Movistar for sponsorship purposes). Sporting Cristal drew its first match but have gone on winning the next three scoring twelve goals and are yet to concede.  The match starts at 17:45h and will be played in the Rosas Pampa Stadium. The other teams in Group A are Academia Deportiva Cantolao (who beat Sport Ancash F.C. last year in a direct duel for promotion), Ayacucho Fútbol Club, Club Deportivo Unión Comercio, Club Sport Alianza Atlético Sullana and Foot Ball Club Melgar from Arequipa who are also last year´s league runners-up.
