Interesting two-day during outdoor climbing event with international participants

L ast weekend on the 6th and 7th, an interesting and competitive outdoor climbing competition was held in Huaraz. The activity was organised by members of the Official Tourism Guide Career of the Eleazar Guzmán Barrón Public Institute of Higher Technological Education in Huaraz, the Andinismo club Wayra, Andinismo club Caway and textile corporation Yuraq Janca.

The event counted with worthy representatives of this sport who enjoyed two days of climbing. The event was divided in two stages. The first stage, the qualifying stage was held at the facilities of the Eleazar Guzman Barron Institute and the final day was held at the indoor climbing wall of the textile corporation Yuraq Janca. The event counted with different categories to compete including infants, juveniles, lady´s masters and male masters, Around 30 participants including some foreign boulder fanatics participated in the qualifying stages of which only the best continued the next day. The degrees of difficulty were set up by the judges of the event and at 4 o’clock in the afternoon the qualifying stage finished and the organizers announced the final results of the competitors that would participate in the grand finale.

On Sunday, the event restarted with the participation of the tiniest ones, who demonstrated their skills by overcoming tough routes with difficulty 5b. After that it was time for the juveniles who had a great participation in the different routes that were set up with a maximum difficulty of 6a. Afterwards, the lady category did their best, struggling hard to overcome routes of a 6a grade according to the French scale. Last but not least, it was the men´s turn who had to overcome a 7a grade route by demonstrating high flexibility and aesthetics. Despite a little bit of rain in the afternoon, the climbing competition was successfully completed.

Leonardo Chávez Lazo became first in the infant category, beating Andrea Lazo Montes and Heidi Falcón Cueva in the final. Leonardo Antúnez Figueroa won in the juvenile category, ahead of Leonardo Narváez Antúnez and Reiner Armas Antúnez. Cecilia Pacpac Zambrano got the best of María Caballero Victoria crowning herself as master mujeres champion. Andréi Mata Velásquez won in the men´s master category, Jaime Quintana Hendrix became runner-up and David Lazo Colcas got a respectable third place at the competition.

Gilf Laurente Barrera, professor at the Public Institute of Higher Technological Education Eleazar Guzmán Barrón called the event a success. ¨We have shown to be able to organise a great and competitive climbing event in Huaraz that will serve as a reference point to know the quality and quantity of competitors in our region¨.
