Basque climber suffers climbing accident while descending Huascaran

A special team from the Rescue Corps of the Mountain Guides Association of Peru (AGMP) have rescued a Spanish mountaineer on his return from Nevado Huascaran. Julver Eguiluz who led the rescue mission, said to the local press that the Spaniard was descending the tricky Huascaran and was offered first-aid by Argentine Vito Magni before the Basque climber was taken to Huascaran base camp. The mountaineer of Spanish nationality and a colleague climber appear to have slipped off a cliff, but luckily survived the accident. Jesús Muniain Irurita was taken to a private clinic for observation and medical treatment.

Rafael Figueroa, President of the AGMP stated that the rescue corps managed to safely evacuate the Spanish mountaineer. The president also said that the Basque is stable and in a good condition. The lack of expertise, recklessness and inexperience, informal tourist guides and even the tourists themselves, because of not hiring the services of professional mountain guides, are the main causes of many accidents in the mountains.

In July of 2016, renowned Mexican mountaineers Carlos Belkotosky and José Miguel Mendoza lost their lives along with their Peruvian guide Julio Constantino Suarez Rey and aspirant guide Gilberto Silverio Loli Sánchez. The fatality happened at a place known as La Canaleta (5,800m) on the Huascaran. This part is probably the most dangerous part of the climb and it´s located just before camp two. In total nine people were involved in the accident, three Mexicans, two Spaniards and four Peruvians, including guides and porters. This year, a couple of climbing incidents have been reported, however, no lethal ones.
