Breaking news: three tourists go missing on Nevado Piramide

A ccording to a special news communication issued by the AGMP Communications Area, a special team of the Rescue Corps of the Mountain Guides Association of Peru (AGMP) has begun the search and rescue of three foreign tourists of Chilean and Russian nationality. The search iniciated this morning and the mountaineers were reported to be lost in the Parón – Cordillera Blanca ravine.

Cristóbal Bizzarri Lyon (23) and Gabriel Navarrete Pucón (32), both of Chilean nationality, went missing when they tried to ascent the Pyramid of Garcilaso Mountain in the Cordillera Blanca. This was confirmed by friends and relatives of the missing persons. It is presumed that the group of Chilean tourists was joined a citizen of Russian nationality (to be confirmed), who would be the third disappeared person.

This group of mountaineers would have been lost since July 22nd, when they were last seen by friends and local residents before they would head of towards Nevado Pyramid. Meanwhile, the AGMP through their Rescue Corps (CRETVI) has begun the search with a first rescue team led by the Official Mountain Guide Josep Guillén Mendoza. The search for missing tourists has started in full in coordination with relatives and the Chilean Consulate in Peru.

Rafael Figueroa Chavez, President of the AGMP and Julio Maguiña Maguiña, Coordinator of CRETVI commented that this type of incidents are reported due to the imprudence of tourists in deciding not to employ official mountain guides.

Nevado Pirámide is about 5,885 metres (19,308 ft) high and it´s located in inside Huascarán National Park, southeast of Caraz and Artesonraju and north of Chacraraju, at the very end of the Lake Parón valley. In 2014, a American Cole Kennedy and Canadian Cory Hall lost their lives in an attempt to conquer the mountain. Its first ascent was realised in 1957 Germans Günter Hauser, Horst Wiedmann and Bernhard Huhn on May 23rd, 1957, following the normal route.
