AGMP confirms death of two Chileans and one American-Russian mountaineer on Piramide

A special team of the Peruvian Mountain Guides Association Rescue Corps (AGMP), led by the Official Mountain Guides Josep Guillén Mendoza and Abel Colana, managed to locate the bodies of three foreign tourists of Chilean and American nationality. The three were reported missing since the 22nd of last month and were found at the base of the Nevado Pyramid Garcilaso in the Cordillera Blanca.

Cristóbal Bizzarri Lyon (23), Gabriel Navarrete Navarrete (32) and Alexander Maznev were found dead at 11:35 am today and the fatal accident would have been caused by a strong avalanche of ice blocks, according to information from the rescue team. The bodies were found in inaccessible terrain surrounded by many cracks. Members of the rescue team of the AGMP are currently carrying out rescue work and confirmed that the bodies will be taken to the Campo Morrena at 4,900 masl tomorrow. Rafael Figueroa Chavez, president of the AGMP confirmed that he will send 15 more rescuers to the area to support the work the rescue team. The bodies will be brought to the city of Caraz for their respective repatriation to their country of origin.

Figueroa Chavez once more stressed the urgent need of a helicopter to assist in this kind of rescue operations. ¨It takes us almost half a day to get to a remote location in the Cordillera Blanca without helicopter. A helicopter could drop the rescue team off at maybe one hour from the place of accident and this might be enough to find missing mountaineers alive.¨

The three unfortunate are the first lethal victims of this year´s climbing season. In 2016 six people lost their lives in the mountains around Huaraz and in 2015, eleven foreigners lost their lives in the mountains around Huaraz including Russian champions Alexander Ruchkin and Vjacheslav Ivanov. Others not making it back alive to their home countries were Ms Marie Gratigny (74) from France, Jorge David Riera Gomez (31), Braulio Rodolfo Rios Gordon (31) and Carlos Esteban Verástegui Romero (26) from Ecuador, Thierry Daniel Badan (46) from France, Estonians Tarmo Riga (43), Jane Riga (42) and Allan Valge (36) and Aviv Yehezkel Bromberg (24) from Israel, who all lost their lives due to different reasons.
