Mass tourism during past weekend has left its marks at Laguna Parón

D uring the past long holiday weekend, the cities of Huaraz, Carhuaz, Yungay and Caraz once again showed visitors their strengths and attractions. In Carhuaz, more than a hundred vehicles were spotted visiting the traditional ice-cream parlors and the city´s lodging places were packed. Same case in Huaraz, where it was hard for international tourists to find a single bed.

Laguna 69 was one the most requested day hikes during the past weekend and the lake Chinancocha (first of the two Llanganuco Lakes) became absolutely overcrowded, as was the case with Pastorury and Lake Churup. In the Conchucos area, a new tourist destination that is getting more popular every day is the characteristic town of Chacas. Many tourists also went to San Luis to visit the temple of the Lord of Pomallucay. In Chavin de Huántar, the Decentralised Direction of Culture organised Chavin de Noche  (a night visit of Chavin de Huantar) which attracted the interest of thousands of visitors. In the province of Huari, Lake Purhuay was the most popular visited attraction because of the Ecotourism Festival organised by its local municipality.

On the downside, mass tourism has left its marks especially at Laguna Parón. Despite the promises of various regional and local authorities, little is done to solve the garbage problem. Plastic, Styrofoam-made products and bottles among other types of solid waste were left or dumped in the surroundings of the Laguna Parón by people short of conscience. The lack of garbage bins and environmental awareness of visitors has caused a problem which the National Park Huascarán should address soon. Caraz Dulzura published a couple of pictures demonstrating the lack of environmental awareness during the past weekend. Most striking picture shows a poor cow having a plastic bag of garbage in its mouth.
