Match review: Sport Rosario (0 – 1) Alianza Lima

T he Estadio Rosas Pampa almost reached its 18,000 capacity for the high profile visit of Club Alianza Lima, Peru’s oldest club and winners of 22 league titles. Sport Rosario have had the misfortune of playing the league’s top two club in consecutive weeks, and following their 2-1 defeat to Real Garcilaso, and sitting 14th in the table, were in great need of getting something against Peru’s most popular side.

Both sides were frustrated in a goalless first half, Sport Rosario limited to ambitious longshots, with Vargas and Arrasco shooting well wide from distance. The first big chance of the game fell to Alianza Lima´s Hohberg, who’s diving header from 8 yards was well saved by Libman. And Libman was called into action again 10 minutes later, doing well to a push away a free kick, and saving a quick fire header moments later. Just before the half, Alianza´s Argentinian striker, German Pacecho, challenged Libman with a fizzing shot from 22 yards, but the keeper matched it with another difficult save.

Sport Rosario’s top goalscorer Posito cut a frustrated figure at half time, as he failed to challenge Prieto at all, but the teams went in level largely thanks to heroics from Sport Rosario’s keeper Libman.

Sport Rosario started the second half well on top, with Uribe shooting just wide from the edge of the area, and a goalmouth scramble caused the Alianza defence complete panic. At 60 minutes, Posito finally had his chance wasted a glorious opportunity, scooping a volley well over from Adrianzén’s excellent cross.

Alianza Lima recovered from their shaky start, and on the 80 minute mark, Sport Rosario’s Jasaui failed to deal with a cross from left-back Cossio, clearing the ball straight to Alianza’s Hohberg who managed to wriggle the ball to Vargas. Vargas’ shot from 12 yards rebounded off the post and into the path of Pacheco, who knocked the ball into an empty net for his 6th goal of the season. The crowds’ furious protests were cut short as they realised Pacheco was played well onside by the lethargic Canovo and Rengifo.

Pacheco, who started his career at Athletico Madrid before playing in Thailand and Ukraine, had scored the winner, as the last ten minutes played out with no chances of note for either side.

The victory sent Alianza Lima above Real Garcilaso to the top of the league table, and defeat kept Sport Rosario in 14th. With just 1 win in their last 5, Sport Rosario need a result. They next play on Sunday, away against FC Melgar, of Arequipa, who sit 6th in the table and have already secured their place in next year’s Copa Libertadores. Sport Rosario will know that a good result is much more likely the week after, when they play Ayachucho FC, who lie one place beneath Sport Rosario at 15th in the table.

Whilst results remain poor for both Sport Rosario and Sport Ancash F.C., the city of Huaraz will be hoping that, come January 18th, they still have one team in the Peruvian First Division.

Man of the match: Pacheco edges it for his match winning goal, but an honourable mention goes to Sport Rosario’s keeper Libman, without whom the game would’ve been over at half time.
