Weather expert warns Huaraz will not be spared from waterlogging

U niversity professor and local meteorologist Rafael Figueroa Tauquino lamented that despite of the warnings realised by the Santiago Antúnez de Mayolo University Meteorology Team to the local and regional authorities, these have not fulfilled their obligations. To comply with the prevention of natural disasters, local and regional authorities were urged to do cleaning work in the rivers that surround the city and to clean up the sewer system to avoid flood problems in the city of Huaraz.

Engineer Figueroa Tauquino therefore predicts that the city centre of Huaraz will end up flooding more than once, like for example happened on November the 30th. ¨Our authorities have so much money that they do not know how to spend it¨. The meteorologist also shared his thoughts on Laguna Palcacocha: ¨Palcacocha is a highly vulnerable lake for the local population, mainly due to the indifference shown by the authorities. Also, I repeat people; we do not have the instruments in Huaraz to face the disasters of nature.¨ Additionally, the university professor warned the Ancash community in the Andes to stop using their cell phones during heavy rainfall because they are highly dangerous for people when standing outside. Cell phone users in Huaraz and the Callejón de Huaylas could end up becoming victims of lightning which usually appear during the heavy rain storms, according to the weather expert.

A couple of days ago, the Local Water Authority (ALA) and the Civil Defense platform of Huaraz started with the cleaning and decolmatation of the Quillcay River, so reported the Head of the ALA in Huaraz, Jorge Ninantay Lobatón. Ninantay Lobatón added that the responsibility has been assumed by his team; however, he also exhorted the authorities of the local governments to carry out a continuous control over the matter; in the framework of the campaign in favour of the aforementioned river and the local population.
