Irresponsible visitors of Huascarán National Park set off fireworks to celebrate New Year

O n their Facebook page, Huaraz Guides have reported and at the same time heavily condemned an attack against wildlife and the preservation of the Huascarán National Park, due to the detonation of fireworks in the glacier area on January 1st. According to a publication by nationwide newspaper El Comercio and Ancash Info, people who would have stayed in the Pisco refuge, located in the Llanganuco Valley at 4,600 metres above sea level, detonated fireworks to celebrate the arrival of the New Year.

A photo of these happenings was shared on January 4th on the Facebook account of Ivan Canturin Cutin. Unpredictably, Canturín eventually took the picture offline due to the multiple criticisms that he publication received. However, Ancash Info managed to take a couple of screenshots of the many comments by Facebook users.  The photo reveals that the fireworks lit up the sky while tourists and visitors of the refuge stand back.

Local tourism guide Romer Yauri Camones said in dialogue with El Comercio to ask for an explanation to the National Service of Protected Natural Areas by the State (SERNANP) in Huaraz. ¨It is assumed that this type of action is prohibited in the Huascarán National Park. The detonation of fireworks alters the habitat of the wild species, in addition its damaging the glacial areas¨, so he stated.

The Huascarán National Park counts wiht 660 glaciers and over 300 lakes. It is a protected area where it is prohibited to damage or alter the flora and fauna, open fire and make bonfires in the glacier area, according to the Tourist and Recreational Use Regulation of the National Park. In 1985, the Huascarán National Park was declared a Natural World Heritage Site by Unesco. It offers shelter to more than 120 species of birds and 10 of mammals, among them the Andean condor, the spectacled bear (tremarctos ornatus or Andean bear), the Andean fox, the deer and the vicuna.
