Jackass’ Steve-O filming in Huaraz and adopts a street dog called Wendy

H uaraz regularly attracts the attention of thrill-seeking adventure-hunters for its high altitude hikes and daring climbs, but the city is currently playing host to one of the most famous daredevils of the early 21st century.

Cult hero Steve-O (Stephen Gilchrist Glover) made a name for himself at the beginning of the century, as part of the Jackass team on MTV. Having built a reputation on the show for doing almost anything for entertainment, Steve-O has spent the past decade performing some outrageous stomach-turning feats. Stunts have included tight-roping above crocodiles with meat in his pockets, letting alligators bite his nipples, and being stung by Peruvian jellyfish.

On January 18th he posted a video of himself in the city of Huaraz, but this one is much easier on the eye than his usual uploads, as Steve-O befriended one of the city’s many street dogs.

Armed with a bag of dog food, Steve-O set out to try and find a canine companion for his trip. After a few failed attempts, he stumbled upon ‘Wendy.’ After giving her a bath, a bed and a brush, Steve-O and Wendy became inseparable, and he has even booked her on a flight back to his hometown of Los Angeles.

But aside from his dog-loving exploits, the British-American-Canadian actor, stunt performer, producer, comedian, author, musician, and clown is filming in Huaraz for his ‘Ultimate Expedition’ YouTube show, having come to Peru with the mission of learning how to mountain climb. He is currently on a trip up Tocllaraju, a 20,000ft behemoth that sits next to Peru’s tallest mountain, Huascarán.

For fans of Steve-O who prefer madcap stunts over devotion to dogs, he has already released a video of him being ‘choked out,’ whilst hiking. The stunt involves a strong man, a neck-breaking manoeuvre, and Steve-O lying out cold on the floor. Fairly tame by his standards, though in the high Andes he’s likely to find ever more imaginative ways of punishing his body. It remains to be seen how he will deal with the lung-bursting altitude of one of the highest mountains in Huaraz.

You can follow Steve-O’s adventures in Huaraz on his YouTube channel. Remember as always, don’t try any of this at home.
