Lima Airlines becomes seventh national airline operating in Peru; Huaraz not on destination list

S ix airlines control the domestic Peruvian air market and now a seventh operator enlists its next entry. Last Saturday, Lima Airlines received its permit to realise regular air transport service of passengers, cargo and mail, granted by the Directorate General of Civil Aeronautics (DGAC). According to the directorial resolution published in nationwide newspaper El Peruano, the airline is authorised to operate 40 air routes to 24 destinations in Peru. Each route will have 14 weekly minimum frequencies. The permit is for four years, but before starting its operations, the airline must still obtain the corresponding operator certificate.

While it is still unknown when Lima Airlines will begin to fly, the arrival of Lima Airlines will boost the offer in the domestic market and will compete with Latam Airlines, Peruvian, Avianca, Star Peru, Viva Air and LC Peru. The latter is the only airline that has Huaraz as their destination. The destinations of Lima Airlines will be Lima, Piura, Talara, Tumbes, Chiclayo, Trujillo, Cajamarca, Ciro Alegría, Andoas, Trompeteros, Iquitos, Tarapoto, Yurimaguas, Jaén, Chachapoyas, Huánuco, Pucallpa, Jauja, Cusco, Ayacucho, Arequipa, Juliaca , Tacna and Puerto Maldonado.

According to figures by the DGAC, from January to November 2017 on domestic flights 10,693,768 passengers were transported, which represented an increase of 7.9% compared to the same period of 2016 when 9,910,416 passengers were mobilised. The market share of the six main airlines was as follows: Latam Airlines 57.8%, Peruvian Airlines 14.2%, Avianca 11.2%, LC Peru 9.7%, Star Peru 3.2% and Viva Air 2.3%.

Lima Airlines will use aircraft of the brands Airbus, Boeing, Bae 146, Bombardier CRJ, Antonov AN, ATR, Dash 8, Dornier, Embraer, Fokker and Saab. The company is an airline that accomplishes private (non-scheduled) flights in Peru since 2012. In addition, in June of last year, it obtained an operating permit for non-regular international air transportation of passengers, cargo and mail to destinations in North America such as Canada, the United States and Mexico, in South America (Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Colombia, Chile, Ecuador, Paraguay, Uruguay and Venezula), Central America, the Caribbean, Europe, Africa, Asia and Oceania. The company is managed by Chinese citizens Chang Wei Ching and Kwo Long Lee.
