Sport Rosario drawn in ´group of death´ for Summer Tournament

L ike last year, Peru´s football season will contain three short tournaments; the Summer Tournament, followed by the Apertura Tournament and finally the Clausura Tournament. The winners of the Apertura and Clausura will play a final to decide the overall winner; the Summer Tournament champion will qualify for the Second Phase of the Copa Libertadores 2019.

The Huaraz-based team were last year´s surprise package, having won the Copa Peru in 2016 and thus promotion from the non-league straight into the Peruvian Premier League of Professional Football; the team ended up runner-up in group A of the Summer Tournament and got a respectable 8th position in the Apertura and 6th in the Clausura. These good results in Peru´s three football tournaments saw the Auriazules qualify for the First Phase of the Copa Libertadores 2018.

Earlier this week the Sports Association of Professional Football (ADFP), under supervision of the Peruvian Football Federation (FPF) realised the draw for the Summer Tournament and saw Sport Rosario end up in group A. This group, considered the ´group of death´ also contain Lima´s three strongest teams including last year´s champions Alianza Lima, Peru´s most popular club Universitario de Deportes and Sporting Cristal. The other teams to complete group A are Ayacucho FC, Comerciantes Unidos, Universidad Técnica de Cajamarca and Universidad San Martín de Porres. The other eight teams in Peru´s highest tier of the Peruvian football pyramid are drawn in group B. All teams will play each other twice and Sport Rosario will kick off next Saturday against Universitario de Deportes.

Sport Rosario signed forward Jaino Posito Olazabal on a free transfer and Jerson Reyes and Luis Galliquio return to the nicrupampa team after having spent time at River Santa and Deportivo Delusa last season. The squad counts with three foreigners; José Miguel Andrade (Ecu), Robinson Aponzá Carabalí (Col) and Darwin Ramírez from Uruguay. Carlos Javier Beltrán from Argentina also holds a Peruvian passport. The Auriazules are trained by 39-year –old Argentinian Pablo Damián Abraham who will make his debut in Peru after having previously managed Chilean minors Magallanes F. C and Club Deportivo Ñublense. Janio Posito, Sport Rosario´s last season top scorer with 12 goals left the team to join giants Alianza Lima but signed Carlos Olascuaga from Universidad César Vallejo as his replacement.

On the 28th of this month, Sport Rosario will play a friendly against Once Caldas from Colombia at their own Rosas Pampa stadium. Opponents Once Caldas won the Copa Libertadores in 2004 and won four domestic titles, the last one in 2010.
