Unasam inaugurates museum that will exhibit research of its archeology students

W ith the presence of the main regional and local authorities, the National University Santiago Antúnez de Mayolo (Unasam) inaugurated a modern mini museum, where the research carried out by the students of the School of Archeology will be exhibited. During a special openings ceremony, attended by rector Julio Poterico Huamayalli, vice-rector for research Dr. José Ramírez Maldonado and archaeologist César Serna Lamas, attendees were informed about the importance and purpose of strengthening local cultural identity. The museum shares with its visitors knowledge, history, art, and culture of both Chavín and Recuay, among other archeological and historical objects of various provinces and districts of the Ancash region.

In addition, a wall was presented, highlighting photographs of the struggle of the Ancash population to achieve the creation of the Unasam. In 1899, the senator for Ancash José Santos Morán presented the first project to create a university in Ancash. It took however until June 1976, before General Francisco Morales Bermúdez Cerruti, President of Peru, promised the creation of the University of Ancash. A year later on May 24, 1977, Decree Law 21856 was enacted to create the National University of Ancash Santiago Antúnez de Mayolo. One year afterwards, in compliance with the Decree Law, on June 10, 1977, an Organising Committee was appointed chaired by Dr. César Carranza Saravia and its academic activities would finally begin in 1978 with 150 students. Currently, the Unasam counts with an estimate of over 6,000 students.

The name of the university was given in honour of engineer, physicist and mathematician Santiago Ángel de la Paz Antúnez de Mayolo Gomero de Mayolo. Nowadays, the Unasam offers masters and PhD studies in education, economics, administration, accountancy and environmental engineering. Additionally, the university has a football club called UNASAM which participates in the Copa Perú.
