Trio of female mountaineers to share their experiences in the Cultural Centre

T his 17th of February three female mountaineers (Flor Cuenca, Tana Mejía and Malú Espinoza) will share their experiences with amateur climbers, professionals, experts and the general public during a public event in the Cultural Centre of Huaraz.

In order to encourage, promote and position female mountaineering in Peru, the Wayra Mountaineering Club of Huaraz is organising an event called “HirkaWarmi, from the Andes to the Himalayas”. HirkaWarmi is a project that seeks to integrate and highlight the participation of Peruvian women in international mountaineering. As mentioned before, this event counts with the participation of narrators Flor Cuenca, Tana Mejia and Malú Espinoza, three women of three different generations and absolute references in Peruvian female mountaineering.

Flor Cuenca is a professional climber with more than 20 years of experience; she was the first Peruvian woman to reach the summit of ChoOyu (8201 m.a.s.l.) in 2016 and Manaslu (8,156 m.a.s.l.) in 2017, which are the sixth and eighth highest mountains in the world. Cuenca accomplished her feats without the use of supplementary oxygen. Also, she has conquered many summits in the Peruvian Andes, such as Alpamayo and Artesonraju and in the Alps she summited 14 mountains of more than four thousand metres high.

On the other hand, Tana Mejía, Peruvian symbol for female mountaineering in the 80s and the first Peruvian woman to conquer Mount Huascarán is another high profile speaker who will share her experiences. Tana has participated in expeditions throughout South America representing Peru in the 80’s as well as becoming the first Peruvian woman to climb the Alps in Europe and the Himalayas in Asia. Last but not least, Malú Espinoza is a talented young mountaineer who has climbed technical faces of Nevado Ranrapalca, Alpamayo and Huascarán, and these mountains can even be very challenging for male mountaineers.

The event will be held in the auditorium of the Cultural Centre of Huaraz, at 6:00 in the evening, entrance is free.
