Jesse´s father keeps his promise and heads to the Santa Cruz Trek

T hough one day delayed, at six o´clock sharp this morning, Todd Galganov left Huaraz by private car heading for the Callejón de Huaylas in order to unite with the two search teams which find themselves on the Santa Cruz Trail near Punta Unión. The first team, integrated by four members belonging to the specialised search team of the Tel Aviv-based Israeli Magnus International Search and Rescue Company, started their search for Jesse Galganov on Saturday the 12th. The second team, incorporated by members of the Peruvian National Police (PNP), search dogs and Armed Forces left yesterday to do a similar search in the same area. Magnus still suspects foul play, whereas the PNP appear to believe the 23-year-old backpacker from Montreal might have got lost somehow.

On the evening before leaving Huaraz, Todd Galganov declared to The Huaraz Telegraph to be restless. Galganov stated to have had some issues gathering all the stuff together such as rain pants, long underwear and a decent tent with sleeping bag and to leave for four days in total. He´s expected to be back in Huaraz on late Saturday afternoon. The executive operator of an advertising national sign company has been in Peru since October last year and stated that he might leave Peru behind any time soon after the Israeli team concludes its search. It´s understood that the Magnus team will conduct a 21-day search, whereas the PNP and Armed Forces will conduct a much shorter four-day search which should conclude on Friday the 18th of this month.

On social media the Canadian-American citizen shared the following: ¨I hired a guide and a horse. Additionally, I also hired a muleteer and donkey. Furthermore, I rented a down jacket, rainproof boots and bought some thermal socks and long underwear top and bottom. The guide should have a headlight and he will bring a portable phone charger too. On the first day I expect to reach the camp of the military and will set up my own tent near theirs. We will not start from Cashapampa like Jesse apparently did, but start in the opposite direction from Vaquería. I believe the military has installed their tents somewhere near the third campsite (Paria) of the Santa Cruz Trek. That´s where my guide and I will stay overnight during the first night. The next morning we will head towards Punta Union and we will probably stay at the second campsite of Taullipampa. At this point I´ll make my prayer service for my boy. I will probably make a smaller one at the summit as well. I´ll see the teams and I´ll try to enjoy the scenery and beauty that drove my son to this majestic mountain¨.

When asked about what he would do if both searches would have a negative outcome, Todd Galganov declared that he probably would leave Peru. However, he said to come back in the future on every 8th of February to remember his son´s birthday. ¨The night before Jesse left to Peru we had a wonderful dinner together and I promised my son that if he would get in trouble somehow, I would be there for him. I am his father so no matter where he´d be in the world, I said to be there for him. I kept that promise and that’s why I haven’t left Peru since I got here. I really hope to find my boy any time soon so his mother, Jesse´s sister, I and all people that are concerned about and love Jesse will have peace and closure soon¨.
