Heavy rain causes many roads to collapse in Huaraz and Ancash area

The torrential rains that affected the Callejon de Huaylas for the past month have left houses, schools and roads in critical conditions. Although most main roads towards and from Huaraz are still unaffected, this is not the case with many smaller passages in the Conchucos area.

In the Colcabamba sector, dozens of passengers stranded due to mud and stones sliding due to geological movements affecting directly the habitants of the provinces of Asunción, Carlos Fermín Fitzcarrald, Mariscal Luzuriaga and Pomabamba. The majority of vehicle units of the transport companies usually circulate along that route and heavy machinery assigned by the Provincial Municipality of Carlos Fermín Fitzcarrald has been working to try to give the pass corresponding to the vehicles that are stranded.

Since last night, the transport company Sifuentes that covers the Lima-Pomabamba route remains stranded waiting for their transit to resume. Due to the heavy rains that have been falling in the Jirac – Pariacoto sector, traffic was severely restricted in the morning and afternoon, so it was necessary to support machinery to overcome the impasse. For its part, the Regional Emergency Operations Committee of Ancash (COER) reported that in coordination with the company that is in charge of the maintenance of this road, traffic is restricted by a single lane.

On the other hand, two landslides near the village of Sacaicacha, belonging to the district of Bolognesi, have kept five districts in the province of Pallasca isolated since yesterday, also damaging two of the province of Santiago de Chuco, in the neighboring region of La Libertad. Villagers have no other option than staying where they are as the access roads towards the coast are blocked at the moment. The provincial mayor Marcial Valerio Chávez was present in the area to assess the damage and see the solution to the impasse. “We locally can do little because of the magnitude of the landslides, which is why we are requesting the urgent support of the Ancash Regional Transport Directorate, so that it can support us in the critical situation we are in,” he said.

On Thursday, February 21, the Peruvian Government through the granting of Supreme Decree No. 035-2019-PCM had declared several districts in some provinces of the departments of Tumbes, Piura, Lambayeque, La Libertad, Ancash and Lima in emergency due to the danger of imminent floods and landslides.
