R ex Broekman (1982) studied Sports, Economics and Communication in Tilburg and left the Netherlands for Huaraz in 2007. In April 2012 he set up The Huaraz Telegraph with the purpose of offering the visitors of Huaraz up to date information on treks, interesting articles and more. Broekman said in an online interview that the main job of The Huaraz Telegraph is to inform and entertain. ¨Indeed it is in the best interests of the paper (and the town) to increase tourist numbers in Huaraz, we are not trying to turn people away, or discourage them from visiting. We need them and we need their money so we can improve the city.¨ The outspoken editor of The Huaraz Telegraph also works as news anchor at the local network of Cable Andino at the seven o´clock news broadcast El Informativo. Mr. Broekman frequently speaks out against touts and the bad treatment of tourists in town by different local enterprises, as well does he report on robberies and accidents in the mountains. Editor Broekman is seen as an expert of Peruvian Andean society and works occasionally as a correspondent or reporter for foreign media.
